What is STEP?
STEP stores exact CAD geometry: true planes, cylinders, cones and freeform surfaces joined into solids. It is the standard way to move parts between CAD systems such as SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Inventor, CATIA and FreeCAD.
Full name
ISO 10303 (Standard for the Exchange of Product Data)
glTF is the open Khronos standard for delivering 3D content on the web. The .gltf version is human-readable JSON that points to a separate .bin file for geometry and to image files for textures.
STEP stores exact surfaces; glTF needs triangles. We mesh each surface with a deviation of 0.05% of the part's size, which keeps holes and fillets smooth for printing and rendering.
Dimensions stay in the units of the original file, usually millimetres.
