What is STEP?
STEP stores exact CAD geometry: true planes, cylinders, cones and freeform surfaces joined into solids. It is the standard way to move parts between CAD systems such as SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Inventor, CATIA and FreeCAD.
Full name
ISO 10303 (Standard for the Exchange of Product Data)
FBX is Autodesk's scene format for games and animation. It carries meshes, materials, hierarchies and animation, and it is the usual way to bring models into Unity and Unreal Engine.
STEP stores exact surfaces; FBX needs triangles. We mesh each surface with a deviation of 0.05% of the part's size, which keeps holes and fillets smooth for printing and rendering.
Dimensions stay in the units of the original file, usually millimetres.
