STP → FBX

Convert STP to FBX

Turn an STP CAD model into an FBX mesh. Curved surfaces are meshed finely enough to stay smooth, and the part keeps its real size and orientation.

  • Fine, accurate meshing of curved surfaces
  • Real size and right way up

How to convert STP to FBX

  1. Add your STP file

Drop it on the converter above or click browse. It opens in your browser, so nothing is uploaded.

  2. Check the format is FBX

FBX is already selected. You can switch to any other output from the menu.

  3. Convert and download

Click Convert and your FBX file is ready in seconds. Download it straight away.

What is STP?

STEP stores exact CAD geometry: true planes, cylinders, cones and freeform surfaces joined into solids. It is the standard way to move parts between CAD systems such as SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Inventor, CATIA and FreeCAD.

Full name
ISO 10303 (Standard for the Exchange of Product Data)
Type
Exact CAD geometry
Used in
SolidWorks, Fusion 360, Inventor, CATIA, FreeCAD, Onshape
Strength
Exact, editable geometry that every CAD program can open.
Limits
Not used directly by slicers or game engines; it has to be meshed first.

What is FBX?

FBX is Autodesk's scene format for games and animation. It carries meshes, materials, hierarchies and animation, and it is the usual way to bring models into Unity and Unreal Engine.

Full name
Filmbox (Autodesk)
Type
3D scene (meshes, materials)
Used in
Unity, Unreal Engine, Maya, 3ds Max, Blender, MotionBuilder
Strength
The default import format for game engines.
Limits
Closed specification; versions differ between programs.

Good to know

STP stores exact surfaces; FBX needs triangles. We mesh each surface with a deviation of 0.05% of the part's size, which keeps holes and fillets smooth for printing and rendering.

Dimensions stay in the units of the original file, usually millimetres.

Questions

Will curves look faceted?

No. Curved faces are meshed with a tight tolerance, so holes and fillets stay smooth.

Does it keep the size of my part?

Yes. The mesh has the same dimensions as the CAD model.

Are my files uploaded?

No. Everything runs in your browser.
