What is OBJ?

OBJ is a plain-text mesh format with optional texture coordinates and normals; materials and textures live in a companion .mtl file. It opens almost everywhere, from Blender to 3D printing software.

Full name
Wavefront OBJ
Type
Triangle mesh
Used in
Blender, Maya, 3ds Max, Cinema 4D, ZBrush, most slicers
Strength
Opens in nearly every 3D program and keeps textures through its .mtl file.
Limits
No animation; large files because it is text.

Good to know

If your OBJ has companion files (.mtl and texture images), select them together with the OBJ file so materials come through.

Questions

Are materials and textures kept?

Colours and texture coordinates are carried over when PLY supports them. PLY does not store textures, so only the geometry and colours carries over.

Will my model be upside down?

No. OBJ and PLY may use different "up" directions, and we rotate the model so it stands the same way in your software.

Are my files uploaded?

No. The conversion runs inside your browser.
